For anyone who has visited my office and seen
my library you may well think I am addicted to books! Yes, there
are many that are unread or partly read but there are also many
well thumbed. The following are in the well thumbed and reticent
to lend out category. Do enjoy.
Mind Power into the 21st Century by
John Kehoe - Techniques to harness the outstanding powers
of thought.
I like this book because it is an easy read, has been produced
from 20 years of teaching these techniques, and has exercises
for you to use as a workbook. This can be used as a focus
for a coaching series, your own self development as I have
over the last few years. It also has a useful list of other
recommended books. |

The
7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal
Change by Steven Covey
A classic, I find this book is a great introduction for young
and new managers to introduce them to concepts that work in
managing themselves and their lives at home and work. There
are tools in here that I pick out and use frequently like
the Time Matrix and Sharpen the Saw. This is also available
as an audio series. It can sometimes be a heavy read for the
time poor or slower readers so for those people I recommend
7 Habits for Highly Effective Teenagers – same concepts
but easier and more visual. |

Who
Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your
Work and in Your Life by Spencer Johnson
This is a perfect parable about change and how to adapt and
enjoy it. This is a wonderful gift for all types of clients. |

|
The
One Minute Manager by Spencer Johnson and Kenneth Blanchard
Another classic and compulsory reading. Learn the secrets
of One minute goals, one minute praisings and one minute reprimands.
This is a simple pre cursor to some of the later books on
thinking, leadership and coaching. |

Authentic
Happiness by Martin E.P.Seligman
This book shows how to use the new positive psychology to
realize your potential for lasting fulfillment. Martin is
regarded as the father of positive psychology. This book has
three sections positive emotion, strength and virtue and in
the mansions of life. There are many self tests in here. |

The
New Leaders: Transforming the Art of Leadership by Daniel
Goleman
The New Leaders is about transforming the art of leadership
into the science of results. It includes excellent writing
on the Emotional Intelligence domains of Self Awareness, Self
management, Social Awareness and Relationship Management.

 |
| |
|
Primal
Leadership: Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence
by Daniel Goleman
Primal Leadership is a newer book. The concepts of Primal
Leadership are introduced in New Leaders. Again, this is an
excellent book for your own development programme or to introduce
to any client. |

Take
Time for Your Life: A Personal Coach's Seven-Step Program
for Creating the Life You Want by Cheryl Richardson
A seven step programme for creating the life you want. An
oldie but a goodie. Every time I access this book I get something
refreshed from it. T is gentle, sensible and challenging all
at the same time. I have had feedback several times that the
chapter on Invest in your financial health is the catalyst
for insight and change. |
 |
| |
|
The
Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental
Force
by Jeffrey Schwartz M.D. and Sharon Begley
This could be regarded a heavy read! So only pick it up if
you are interested. It details some very interesting experiments
from the last 30 years as this science has developed. I particularly
like the Free will free wont concept. It could be edited –
you certainly get a lot about the man who wrote it but it
is fascinating stuff. |

Quiet
Leadership: Six Steps to Transforming Performance at Work
by David Rock
This is one of the most useful coaching books I have read.
It really has you focus on thinking about thinking! |
 |
| |
|
Co-Active
Coaching: New Skills for Coaching People Toward Success in
Work and Life with CDROM by Laura Whitworth, Henry Kimsey-House
& Phil Sandahl
In my view this is one of the best coaching manuals available.
I love the chapter on listening, all the resources in The
Coaching Toolkit section. In particular here I really like
the Inquiries section which has many questions to assign to
your clients to reflect, discover and learn from. |

Lovemarks:
The Future Beyond Brands by Kevin Roberts
This is a beautiful book. Not only full of optimistic wisdoms
from one of the worlds greatest optimists but creatively and
beautifully designed. This makes an awesome gift and is one
to always have to open on your coffee table. It is full of
thought provoking ideas like creating loyalty beyond reason. |
 |
| |
|
First,
Break All The Rules by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman
- what the worlds greatest managers do differently.
This is a gutsy and energetic book written by the leaders
of the Gallup Organisation who are a world leader in measurement
and analysis of human attitudes, opinions and behaviours.
Chock full of excellent material and thinking from many tears
of research. |

Building
a Values-Driven Organization: A Whole System Approach to Cultural
Transformation by Richard Barrett
This one is in the list because I am passionate about this
idea! This book is almost a practitioner manual but will hopefully
inspire many in the management, HR professions to introduce
this approach as a pre cursor to coaching programmes. |
